Bird-song in Spring
Now that the days are lengthening and the temperatures are rising, you will notice that the level of bird-song has increased. In fact, the sound of birds in the spring is one of the clearest signs that winter has finally passed. As the days grow longer and the air begins to warm, birds return to gardens, parks, and countryside hedgerows, filling the mornings with song. What was once quiet and still becomes lively again. Early in the morning especially, the air can be filled with a chorus of chirps, whistles, and trills that seem to celebrate the changing season.
For many people, hearing birds in spring brings a sense of renewal and hope. After months of cold weather and grey skies, these sounds remind us that nature is waking up again. Birds sing for several reasons during this time. Many are marking their territory or trying to attract a mate, so their songs are often louder and more frequent than at other times of the year. This creates the “dawn chorus,” when many species sing together just after sunrise. When you hear birds singing, look out for males who have adopted a song-post where they sing every day!
Listening to birds can also encourage people to slow down and notice the world around them. Whether walking through a park, sitting in a garden, or simply opening a window in the morning, the songs of birds can make a moment feel calm and peaceful. In this way, the sounds of spring birds are not just part of nature—they also connect people to the changing rhythms of the seasons and remind us of the simple beauty of the natural world. 🐦🌱🌞
