To clean or not to clean …

How Often Should You Really Have Your Ears Cleaned?

Blocked ears, muffled hearing or that annoying feeling that everything sounds like you're underwater? It could be down to a build-up of ear wax!

Ear wax is perfectly natural, and despite what many people think, it's actually good for your ears. It acts as a protective barrier, trapping dust, dirt and bacteria before they can travel further into the ear canal. Your ears are also pretty clever – they have their own natural cleaning system, which usually means you don't need to do anything at all!

But what happens when that system doesn't quite keep up?

Some people naturally produce more ear wax than others, while narrow ear canals, hearing aids and even the use of cotton buds can contribute to troublesome build-up. If you're someone who regularly suffers from blocked ears, you might benefit from having them checked periodically.

There's no magic number when it comes to ear wax removal. Some people may never need it, while others might need professional treatment every 6–12 months. The important thing is not to wait until your hearing becomes noticeably affected.

And please, put those cotton buds down! They can push wax further into the ear and make the problem worse.

If your ears feel blocked or your hearing seems muffled, a professional assessment can establish whether wax is the culprit and whether removal is necessary.

Remember, healthy ears don't need constant cleaning – they just need a little attention when something isn't quite right! Give us a call right now and let’s have a look and see what going on - 01392 931039 - or book an appointment here.
