Phew, it’s hot!

Hot weather can affect more than just energy levels and sleep — it can also have an impact on ear health. During a heatwave, increased sweating and humidity can create the perfect environment for bacteria and fungi to grow, particularly in the outer ear canal. People who swim frequently to cool down may also be more prone to irritation or infections such as swimmer’s ear, especially if water becomes trapped in the ear after swimming.

Keeping ears dry and clean is one of the simplest ways to reduce problems during very hot weather. After swimming or showering, gently dry the outer ear with a towel and tilt the head to help trapped water escape. As we have said before, cotton buds should not be used, as they can push wax deeper into the ear and irritate delicate skin inside the canal. Excessive earwax can also become more noticeable in heat, as sweating and dehydration may affect the natural balance within the ear.

Heatwaves can sometimes contribute to dehydration, which may worsen symptoms such as dizziness or tinnitus in some people. Drinking plenty of water and limiting alcohol or caffeine intake can help maintain hydration and support overall ear health.

Anyone using hearing aids should also take extra care in hot conditions. Sweat and moisture can affect electronic components, so devices should be cleaned regularly and stored safely when not in use. If pain, discharge, swelling or sudden hearing changes occur, medical advice should be sought promptly, as infections can worsen quickly in warm weather.
