Why we don't like cotton buds!
Cotton buds are a wonderful invention for gently cleaning the surface of old or corroded coins. They are also widely used in hygiene and beauty, for applying or removing makeup, and in many medical and industrial settings. But, despite the obvious temptation, they should never be used for cleaning earwax. Why not?
you should never insert anything into the ear canal; it can seriously damage either the canal walls or - worse - perforate or damage the ear drum
instead of clearing or removing ear wax, they can often push the wax back down the ear canal, which can lead to impaction of the wax further down the canal, or blockage of the canal
it can cause temporary loss of hearing and introduce infection
Cleaning the outer ear is best done with a soft cloth or a flannel, carefully moistened with warm water, but do not over-clean as this can lead to dryness or itching. Wear earplugs when swimming and make sure to dry your ears carefully when you come out so that water is not left in your ear.
If you suspect that earwax has built up in your ear and is causing loss of hearing or tinnitus - ringing in the ears - you should always seek professional advice. We can look down inside your ear canal and see whether there is any blockage or other matters of concern and offer an effective way to address these safely.
